About Us

A Little History

The Guest House was founded in 1994 when two veterans, Chuck Fulkerson and Dick Rhyno, realized that veterans and family members were sleeping in their cars while visiting area hospitals because they did not have the means to stay anywhere else. Thus began a credo that "never again on our watch" would veterans and their families be without a safe, warm and clean place to stay.

Working with supporters, the non-profit Veterans Hospital Foundation was established in 1991. Between 1992 and 1993, a building fund was established and tax-exempt status was obtained. In 1994 the present location was leased, and an option to buy was executed in December of that year. From 1995 to 1998, renovations were made to upgrade the facilities to provide the capacity of seven bed spaces. In 1999 the mortgage was retired and a building expansion fund was established.

Guests are encouraged to donate $25 per night to help defray costs, but no one is refused for lack of funds. The Veterans Guest House is funded through the generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations. No government funds are received from Federal entities or the states of Nevada and California.

The need is going to continue for years to come. The men and women who served our country and keep us free deserve to have a roof over their head when receiving medical treatment. That is the least that should be done.
