Thomas, a Navy veteran, is often heard cheerfully greeting visitors, staff, and fellow guests as he walks through the hallways of the Guest House. But on his recent trip to Reno, a two-hour drive from his home in Hawthorne, Thomas’s steps were slower, and his usual brightness dimmed by discomfort.
Staff quickly noticed why: Thomas’s shoes had been worn down to their last threads—holes and rips exposing his toes, the fabric stained and battered from years of use. His reliable old shoes may seem comfortable, but they aren’t safe. His newer pair constantly catch on his car pedals, making driving even more dangerous.

Thomas’s medical complications cause severe swelling in his feet and lower legs, making it nearly impossible to find a comfortable and functional fit. With the cold months approaching, he’s left braving the weather with shoes that have given all they can.
Thanks to you, Thomas will have a new pair of shoes to carry him through the season. Your support of the Basic Needs Program gives veterans like Thomas essentials like comfortable, durable shoes.
You can make a difference this holiday season by sponsoring a veteran, ensuring they have what they need to live safely—whether it’s a warm coat, gas to get home, or a comforting meal.
